Shane MacGowan has teamed up with Johnny Depp to record a version ‘Leaving of Liverpool’ – a sea chantey dating back to 1885.
The single is set to the be the first release from Hal Willner’s compilation album ‘Son Of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys’ – a follow up to his 2006 collection ‘Rogues Gallery’. Willner was inspired to create the albums after spending time with Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski on the set of ‘Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest’.
Shame MacGowan provides the vocals for ‘Leaving of Liverpool’ “in a gruff sailors’ accent so authentic that it’s nearly incomprehensible” (Rolling Stone) – with Depp and Verbinski also featuring on the track.
‘Son Of Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys’ also features Tom Waits, Keith Richards, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Patti Smith, Sean Lennon, Frank Zappa and others – it will be released on 19th February.
